[8.02] Determine whether the following polynomials can be factored by grouping. If so, factor the polynomials showing all work. If not, explain why this method will not work. a.4x2 + 12xy + 2x + 2y b.3m2 + 6mn + 7m + 14n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first one is factored by grouping, I am confused on the 2nd. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think...HELP!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it can take out the 3m from the first part and 7 from the second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, thx. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you get 3m(m+2n)+7(m+2n)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then you can simplify it as (3m+7)(m+2n)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good enough?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm...yes, can you show me the first one to make sure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a.4x2 + 12xy + 2x + 2y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah....im not so sure about the first one...i dont think you can do it by group factoring because it can't be factored unless done by completing the square or using the quadratic formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait...you did learn about breaking it up into 3 and 1 or 2 and 2 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I really don't understand this!!! I hate math and science. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, I'm not a big fan either, but im pretty sure you cant do the first one, let me look it up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah..you can't

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, wow, lol! Then what do I say?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they will all have to become a diff of squares to be solvable for the first one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. cannot be factored by grouping B. can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, lol! Thx!! :D totally think this stuff is hard!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now I need the other one aboutr Jose. :)
