Can someone help with basic past tense forms of different verbs? (estar, ser, hablar, and so on)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are two kinds of past tense, in Spanish. We've got the Preterite, and the Imperfect. Are you looking for an explanation of the Preterite?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Side question: when do you need to use preterite, and when do you need to use imperfect?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We use the preterite whenever we're talking about a past action that was SHORT, and happened ONE TIME. On the other hand, we use the imperfect when we're talking about pasy actions that were CONSISTENT and ONGOING.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For example, if I wanna say.... "When I was little, I played with my friends every weekend," I would have to use the IMPERFECT. Because I'm talking about something that happened CONSISTENTLY, and on a REGULAR BASIS. You see?

Yeah, that makes sense! Thanks!
