How to find the Rate of Change?

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

Rate of change is the slope at a certain point, P(x,y)

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

There is a slope formula you can use

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's the formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like if they give me a table with the amount of minutes/time and calories burned? for example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

???

OpenStudy (amistre64):

for a given time interval, it would most likely be; the change in calories divided by the change in time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thnk u! (: so you divide what u already have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find the rate of change in calories burned with respect to time. time (minutes) 40,60,0 Calories Burned- 500,750,1000

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im not sure what you mean by "already have" spose you take 2 points of reference of the form (time, calorie): call them \((t_1,c_1) ~and~ (t_2,c_2)\) it shouldnt matter which reference points you pick since they should all be on the same line to begin with the rate of change, is the slope between the 2 points:\[\Large\frac{c_2-c_1}{t_2-t_1}\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

time (minutes) 40, 60, 0 ; zero ??? Calories Burned- 500,750,1000

OpenStudy (amistre64):

is that last time value 80 by chance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so it's like finding the slope basically

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes, finding the slope between 2 reference points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhh i see xD thnk u so much! i am ready for my test now woohooo

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck :)
