I have lived and die --- the term living here is not thrown around to mean just having fulfilled bodily needs over the years, but the accumulation of human experiences that have molded him to be ready, as he is, on the altar of death, ready to take the plunge after having 'lived'.

on every visage is a black veil---- Death has long been considered as a transition more than just the end of this life, it is what separates this world from those beyond. In text, it has often been called the 'black curtain' or the 'dark veil', an allegorical extension of the purpose it serves as the separation between worlds, a separation only crossed once. When Hooper says he sees a black veil on all faces, he refers to the veil of death having manifested itself in the form of deceit and conceit over the faces and thus the lives of his fellow humans. The 'black veil' also is a reflection of his comment about death, as it hides from the mortal sight the other world, the 'black veil' on the faces of others hides their true nature, mostly from others and sometimes even from themselves.
