I'd probably go with the third option, a person who was involved in the event in some way. If they were involved, it often means that they would have a first-hand account of what occurred.

Friends and family may not know the whole story, and it might be biased information because of what they experienced. Scholars who write about it afterwards are separated by time and have to rely on what they can gather from other sources, so it's not the most direct method. And interviewing only the people opposed to it only brings one side of the story, not the most direct information that asking other people associated with it could bring.
