words we use to describe a person ( his or her name), a place or a particular thing (like an 'apple') are all called nouns. This is what Kelly meant.
A verb is a word that describes action, like run, jump, talk etc.

Hey there,

As a general rule, a noun is a "person, place or thing." So, "a field," "A cloud" "My brother" "The shop." All of these are nouns.
Verbs are actions/movements which describe what someone is doing/what state they're in. Verbs in the primary form always begin with "to:" ie, To do, to be, to want, to have.
A trick for remembering the difference is that you cannot touch a verb, whereas you can touch most nouns (figuratively.) So the verb, "to go;" there is no physical thing called a "go," that we can touch, and that's because "to go," is a verb, and describes the movement of one place to the other. So try picking which of the following are verbs or nouns:

1. To select.
2. The computer.
3. A machine.
4. To operate.
5. To decide.
6. A village.

Now pick out which is the verb, and which is the noun of these sentences:

1. I went to the city yesterday.
2. I decided to buy a cat.
3. There were 50 birds that I recognized there.
