WHT IS HOOK,S LAW

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

Hooke's law states that the force F required to restore a spring is given by F = kx where x is the distance the spring is stretched or compressed from its rest position and k is the constant of proportionality or the spring constant. Example: Suppose a spring is stretched 0.30 m with a force of 360 N. How far can the spring be stretched from its rest position if a 225 N force is applied? Solution: The spring is stretched 0.30 m with a 360 N force. Applying this knowledge, we first find the spring constant k. Thus F = kx k = F/x k = (360 N)/(0.30 m) k = 1200 N/m Now we have F = 1200x We're asked how far can the spring be stretched from its rest position if a 225 N force is applied. Thus F = 1200x x = F/1200 x = 225/1200 x = 0.188 ∴ the spring must be stretched 0.19 m from its rest position.
