Unfortunately, the answer is the second one, that the United States suppressed a Filipino independence movement in order to retain control of the islands. After the Spanish-American War, the US acquired the islands from Spain (who lost). However, during the War, the Filipinos declared independence from Spain as a republic. But the US didn't see it that way and considered the Philippines as their territory. When the Filipinos attempted to assert their independence through arms, the US brought in their military and after about a year or so, it was over.
