Help! This is driving me crazy): I need help "popping" my ears and I didn't know what subject to put this in so I chose this one and Health. I have tried everything: chewing gum, hold nose and blowing, drinking water, hold noise and drinking, putting water in my ear and waiting, yawing but nothings working! Please please help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can try pinching your nose, closing the back of throat, by pressing the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth, and then blow your nose (while still pinching it shut, of course).

OpenStudy (nicole143):

Nothing happened):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm....why is it that you wanna pop your ears? Does it feel like the air pressure inside of them is off balance?

OpenStudy (nicole143):

Yes, my right ear feels blocked.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've heard of a trick where people will put water into their ears. The water displaces the air. And then you could shake the water out of your ears. It's a gamble, because if you can't shake the water out of your ears afterward, you'd have an even more annoying problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you know how to use a Q-tip, and put it into your ear juuuuust far enough, you could soak up the water, that way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can yarn! that always helps me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol. She can yarn?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea that pops my ears all the time! or use peroxide to drain your ear! just a suggestion

OpenStudy (nicole143):

I tried that just a few minutes ago, I let the water sit then shook it out but it didn’t help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I think she's tried yawning. I hear it works. But I imagine it's harder to yawn voluntarily.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How long have you had this problem?

OpenStudy (nicole143):

Since yesterday, I believe.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because so many solutions haven't worked, I'm starting to think that there might actually be something inside your ear. It's strange enough that it's only happening in one ear.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You don't feel any pain, do you? Does it feel any hotter than normal, inside your right ear?

OpenStudy (nicole143):

I have cleaned my ears out so many times today, it started last night and I thought it would be gone when I woke up but it wasn’t, obviously. I tried the peroxide, it felt really weird and I think my ear is now irritated from the cleaning and water and everything. I don’t really feel any pain or anything, it’s just like the feeling when you come down from the mountains right before they pop.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

chew gum... that helps also. but i recommend you go to emergency.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright. I'm sorry, I wish I could think of more to help. I really do think it's weird that it's stayed for so long, and that it's only happening in one ear. If only I could actually look inside your ear with an ear scope, to see if there's anything in there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand that the peroxide might have irritated your ear. That should wear off. BUT if the irritation continues, then you could see a doctor. There might be something in your ear that doesn't belong there. Other than that, I'm stumped for solutions. I'm sorry.

OpenStudy (nicole143):

Chewing gum right now. My father works at the hospital, he should be able to talk in an hour. I told him about it last night he just to wait and see in the morning. Thank you for your help! Are you sure you don't know anything else?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is he a doctor?

OpenStudy (nicole143):

No he is a LVN but he is friends and works with all the doctors and is sometimes in with it all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Open your mouth slightly, as if to yawn. Open it about as far as you would to say "ahhh," and attempt a yawn. Keep open your mouth slowly with your mouth in an "O" shape, until you break into a full yawn. Stop when you have felt your ears un-pop. Repeat if the first yawn didn't work. You will know it when the pressure rebalances. You'll not only hear a pop, you'll suddenly hear much clearer than you had.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh he's a nurse. That sounds perfectly fine. He should know what to look for. I'm sorry, I can't think of anything else we could try. I see that you've tried a whole bunch of solutions, that would normally solve an air-clogged ear. It could be a really stubborn air-clogged ear. Or it could be that your ear has something in it that doesn't belong there. Going on what you've told me, I think the best thing to start out with would be to actually take a look inside of your ear. I'm sorry that I can't offer any ideas beyond that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the irritation that you're feeling continues, and there's redness or swelling, in your ear, then you could be dealing with an infection. I don't mean to scare you or anything. But you say your dad's a nurse. So he'll probably know what to look for.

OpenStudy (nicole143):

Alright, thank you. I will talk to him and see what I can do. Maybe he can look and see if anything further than air is wrong. Hopefully I don’t have a serious infection.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alrighty. Don't worry. If you just got this, and it doesn't feel terribly inflamed, then there's no way it could be a serious infection, if it even were an infection. I hope your problem gets solved though.

OpenStudy (nicole143):

Alright, thank you so much for your help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's no problem. =)

OpenStudy (nicole143):

Awesome, well I will try to post if everything works out(:
