six p minus nineteen is less than twenty-nine

OpenStudy (dls):

6p-9<29

OpenStudy (dls):

6.3

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

\[6p - 19 < 21\]This is basically an equation with a less than sign instead of an equals sign. So what do you do to solve an equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is p?

OpenStudy (dls):

6.3

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

@DLS i was trying to get him to figure it out on his own.

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

You have to isolate p. That means you have to get only p on one side and everything else on the other side.

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

So you subtract the other stuff on p's side so it is alone. So in this case we subtract (or in this case we actually add) 19 to -19, which makes it 0. In other words we now have p alone.

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

And the addition/subtracton property of equality says that if you subtract or add something to both sides, it will still be equal. So we added 19 to -19, now we have to add 19 to 21. 19 + 21 = 40.

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

Wait wait wait. It's 29 that you add to. Sorry, I messed up.

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

So you add 19 to 29, which is 48. Then you have \[6p < 48\]

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

then you just divide 6 by both sides:\[\frac{ 6p }{ 6 } < \frac{ 48 }{ 6 }\]Which cancels out the 6 in 6p so it ends up as just p. Then 48 divided by 6 is 8, so the answer is p < 8.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

@yoyogators u still here?

OpenStudy (lstrasmann):

you're welcome.
