Ionic bonds require the removal or aquisition of electrons, so by definition they form between ions. An alkali metal is one in Group 1 of the periodic table like lithium, sodium, rubidium, caesium and francium. They form positive ions by losing their only unpaired outer electron. These readily form compounds with halogen elements like fluorine and chlorine which form ions of a negative charge like chloride or fluoride by gaining an electron. Examples like sodium chloride are very stable compounds since both ions have full electron shells.
