16. Is the line through points P(–8, –10) and Q(–5, –12) perpendicular to the line through points R(9, –6) and S(17, –5)? Explain. (1 point) Yes, their slopes are different. No, their slopes are not opposite reciprocals. No, their slopes are not the same. Yes, their slopes have the same number in them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use (Y2-Y1)/(X2-X1) to find the slopes of each lines. If one is the negative reciprocal of the other, then they are perpendicular.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is the answer a cause their slopes are different?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont like math -.- im going with B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh crap i meant C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause if thier slopes are different then its not perpendicular. its C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No im great with every other class i just hate math!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He's right. You're lazy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I gave you the procedure, follow it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg fine give me a second!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So its -2/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and since on is negative they are perpendicular?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok the slope of the first one is -2/3. What about the second one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So -2/3 and 1/8 and those are perpendicular right cause one is a negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought if something had the same slope than meant it was perpendicular?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They're not perpendicular because one is not the negative reciprocal of the other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If they were 2/3 and -3/2, they would be perpendicular. Or 7/8 and -8/7. Or 15/100 and -100/15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Same slope = parallel

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what exactly does that mean -.- i feel so dumb im 18 and dont know this pellet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Negative reciprocal means you invert the fraction and make it negative. So can you find the negative reciprocal of 5/6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good :) So if the slopes aren't negative reciprocals of each other, they're not perpendicular!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh so the answer is B woop yay :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are awesome :) Thanks so much!
