Factor of a Polynomial 21AB - 14AX + 15BY - 10XY Please show me steps on how to solve this! Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are ur a's and b's constants or variables?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wish i knew

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

7A(3B -2X) +5Y(3B - 2X)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you show me in steps, how to solve it? Other wise its just funny numbers with letters to me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

theres a bunch of ways to facto this...

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

(7A + 5Y)(3B - 2X)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get that? what steps do you do first?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Look at the first two terms, and see what can be factored out. Then look at the last two terms, and see what can be factored out. Then you have a common factor that can be pulled out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x^2 - x - 55 Step 1: Write two sets of parentheses ( )( ) Step 2: What does 2x^2 factor into? 2x and x Write that on the left side of each set parentheses (2x )(x ) Step 3: How can you factor -55? There are several choices: -55, 1 -1, 55 -11, 5 -5, 11 These are the numbers that will go in the right sides of the parentheses, but how do you choose the right ones? You need to try guess, and then check the guess to see if it works. Start with -11, 5 (2x - 11)(x + 5) Do OI of FOIL and see if you get the original middle term, -x 2x(5) + (-11)x = 10x - 11x = -x (good guess) Therefore final answer is (2x - 11)(x + 5) if it was written like this i could follow you.

thanks for taking the time and helping me guys!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

21AB - 14AX + 15BY - 10XY First step of factoring: try to factor a common factor from all terms. Here there isn't one. Next step: if you have a 4-term polynomial, try to factor a common factor from first two terms: 7A(3B - 2X) + 15BY - 10XY Next step: see if you can factor a common factor from last two terms: 7A(3B - 2X) + 5Y(3B - 2X) Now that you have a common factor of (3B - 2X) in the first part and second part, factor it out: (3B - 2X)(7A + 5Y)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

This is called factoring by parts.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

you're welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can I ask why does the 7 go first and not the 3? it it what ever factors out go first? like the 7 out of 21 and the 5 out of 15 and 10?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If you meen what goes first in the final answer, you can write it either way as (3B - 2X)(7A + 5Y) or (7A + 5Y)(3B - 2X)

thanks!
