an oscilloscope is a device which generates various kinds of waveform of an electrical signal.. like sine wave, square wave, etc..!!

exactly... it doesn't generate m sorry.. those are called as oscillators... oscilloscope will show you!!.. what kind of signal is being fed into them!

OK, but in my book it shows a figure involving a filament and some deflection plates. Can u explain that to me please?

filament and deflection plates form the part of CRT.. thats why i asked if you knew what CRT was.. so I figured you knew :P.. CRT is only used to DISPLAY it to us!!.. filament is heated to a very high temperature.. the electrons are stripped off from the surface of the material (thermionic emission) then to make sure the electrons are coming straight as we want and not thrown off somewhere a high potential difference is applied.. so a fine beam of electron is generated.. then we have a set of horizontal and vertical deflection plates where cross fields are put.. its called as velocity selector .. by changing the mag and electrical fields you can make the electron go anywhere and hit the phosphor screen!..

CRT IS A PART OF CRO.. nothing is being generated here!!
