OpenStudy (aripotta):

Would it benefit society to read more facts than fantasy? Or should we strive for a literacy intake of equal amounts of both fiction and nonfiction?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Interesting question. I'm all for literacy, no matter what form it takes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well it depends. I agree with ^^ Literacy relates to us more on a personal level then just facts. We would probably lose most readers if we read more facts then fantasy.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i actually agree with both you guys. i prefer reading fiction, but sometimes i wonder if i should read more nonfiction. i think that if we lose fiction, we lose creativity. and in order to get the new facts, we need creativity for experiments, hypotheses, etc. i think most people assume that intelligence is directly proportional to literacy. so...does what we read affect how smart we are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it does. Our brains soak up all the information you learn from you book that you read. If I read a real childish book I would probably would be in that mind set. Of talking very young. But If I were to read something nonfictional but still very educational I would talk differently and your thought process would be different.
