Was the New Deal a success? Address at least two of the following in your response: a. The first part of the New Deal was also about reform. Did the reforms succeed? b. Did the New Deal end the Great Depression? c. What New Deal programs do we still have today? How do they affect our lives? Are they successes? d. The first part of the New Deal was about relief. Did these relief efforts succeed?
The New Deal saved capitalism. Without it, there would have been some kind of revolution (perhaps like in Germany or perhaps like in the USSR). If you look at programs like Social Security, TVA, and FDIC, it is clear that the New Deal was a great success. Glass-Stegal prevented another major recession (and its repeal led directly to the banking abuses that brought abut the current economic downturn). Repeal of Prohibition was a success. The Great Dust Bowl was created because of short-term agricultural policies, but the New Deal brought about a revamped Dept of Agriculture that Don't get confused by partisan misinformation. The 1937 recession was caused by conservative cut-backs on the New Deal. If spending had increased as it did earlier, there wouldn't have been the recession. No, the New Deal didn't end the depression, but again don't be confused by partisan (but economically incorrect) conclusions. People will tell you that World War II ended the Depression; in fact, Keynesian spending that occurred during WWII ended the Depression. So it wasn't the New Deal, but it wasn't the war either. It was the spending due to the war that ended the Depression.
