Not much poison gas was actually used, although it was greatly feared. It was difficult to control where it went, since it is, of course, a gas. So it could easily miss its intended target, doing nothing at all, or even blow back on your own troops, if the wind didn't cooperate. It was a scary weapon, to be sure, but just blowing people up with high explosives went on almost around the clock for years and years.

And as for the others -- tanks were only introduced near the very end of the war, and did not participate that much. U-boats were also greatly feared, but you had to be on a ship to be at risk, and not that many people were on ships. Actually, it was much more dangerous to be on a U-boat than on the ships they hunted. Your odds of surviving each tour in a U-boat were probably around 50%.
