Conjugating Spanish verbs into the preterite is pretty simple. You can think of "preterite" as "past." You know that Spanish verbs can have three different endings, right? AR, ER, and IR. ~~~~~~~~ First, I'll show you how to conjugate verbs that end with AR, into the preterite. I'll use HABLAR (to speak), as an example. First, we have to take off the AR ending of HABLAR. So, we're left with HABL. And then, we can add on new endings. Depending on the ending that we add on, the meaning changes. Here are all the new forms of HABLAR, in the preterite: (Yo) Hablé (Tú) Hablaste (Él/Ella/Usted) Habló (Nosotros) Hablamos (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) Hablaron You see, the endings that we can add on are.... é aste ó amos aron We just have to memorize them, and their forms. It's pretty easy. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Next, I'll show you how to conjugate verbs that end with ER, into the preterite. I'll use COMER (to eat) as an example. Again, we first take off the ER ending. So then we're left with COM. And here are all the preterite forms of COMER: (Yo) Comí (Tú) Comiste (Él/Ella/Usted) Comió (Nosotros) Comimos (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) Comieron So you see, for ER verbs, we can add on these endings: í iste ió imos ieron Again, all we have to do is memorize them, through practice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Finally, I'll show you how to conjugate IR verbs, into the preterite. Pay special attention to this one, because I think you'll notice that it's the same as ER verbs. I'll use ESCRIBIR (to write) as an example. Again, first, we need to take off the IR ending. So, we're left with ESCRIB. And here are the preterite forms: (Yo) Escribí (Tú) Escribiste (Él/Ella/Usted) Escribió (Nosotros) Escribimos (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) Escribieron So you see, the endings that we can add onto the end are: í iste ió imos ieron And did you notice? ER verbs and IR verbs conjugate in to the preterite in the exact same way! That makes it a whole lot simpler, no? ~~~~~~~~~~ Just a heads up, there are some verbs that conjugate into the preterite irregularly. That means that some verbs don't follow these normal rules, when we conjugate them into the past tense. Some examples are... DECIR (to tell) HACER (to do) PONER (to put) TENER (to have) SER (to be) IR (to go) SABER (to know) These verbs don't follow the normal rules, when we conjugate them into the preterite. If you have a Spanish book, you can probably look them up in there. This website will also show you how to conjugate any verb: http://www.123teachme.com/spanish_verb_conjugation/prep Just type the verb into the GREEN BOX, on the right side. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your homework asks you to write a paragraph explaining what happened yesterday, or last week. You'll need to come up with many sentences. Here, I'll give you an example: Ayer, yo hablé con mi amiga. Yesterday, I spoke with my friend. "Hablé" was in the first example that I showed you. Remember? It's the preterite YO form of HABLAR (to speak). And since Yo means I, Hablé means "I spoke." ~~~~~~~~~~ You can come up with more sentences. If you like, you can post them here, and I can proofread them with you.

@InYourHead if I write a paragraph in english could you do it in preterite for me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you write a paragraph in Spanish, I could help proofread it for you. If I were to translate your paragraph from English to Spanish, I'd be doing you work for you. And that won't help you learn spanish.
