solve 4x-y=3, -12x+3y=-4

OpenStudy (n00bstyle):

Always try to think of this way: You can solve x and y (2 unknows), if you have the same number of equations. So in this case you have two unknows, and two equations. In this way you can SUBSTITUTE. So from the first equation you'll get an expression in y, and you will plug this into the second equation. So you can then calculate x. After you have calculated x, you plug this into the first equation, which gives you the solution for y

OpenStudy (n00bstyle):

equation 1 will result in: y = 4x - 3 Substitute into the second equation, which gives you: -12x + 3*(4x - 3) = -4 You know have one equation, with one unknown. In this way you can calculate x.
