Rule of exponents: Why does (3a^4)^3 equal 27 ^ a^12? Please explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the rulle of exponenets are perenthesis subtract divide mutiply

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

(3a^4)^3 is the same as (3a^4)*(3a^4)*(3a^4) which rearranges to (3*3*3)*(a^4*a^4*a^4)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and that's the same as (3)^3 * (a^4)^3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see how to go from (3)^3 * (a^4)^3 to 27a^12 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay. Thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
