Let the first no. be \(x\) & other be \(y\).
Now, according to question:-
x+y=16 ....... (i)
also y=3x-4
Now put the value of 'y' in first equation & you got :-
x+3x-4=16
4x-4=16
Take 4 as common :-
4(x-4)=16
x-4=16/4=4
x=8

Therefore y=8 because
x+y=16
8+y=16
y=16-8=8
