Explain why the sum of the coefficient on the reactant side of a balanced equation does not have to equal the sum of the coefficients on the product side of the reaction.

Never thought about it, ah, "... it does not have to equal ..." the only important thing is that every mole of every element in the reactant side is CONSTANT and REMAINS in the product side of the reaction equation.
