I've never taken one of these courses before.  Is the homework actually reviewed by anyone or are answer sheets simply provided after it's 'due'?

Hi jeffjfish, I wasn't sure about that either, also my first time, but http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00sc-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-spring-2011/index.htm Course Description mentions that it is setup as a self-assesment exercise. So I'm guessing there is no homework to hand in or exam that will be marked

Correct.  We don't collect exercises.  You can get feedback in three ways:  The IDLE environment tells you if the code you've written works; the Codecademy site gives you feedback on their exercises; and you can post you code here and get really great critiques from some of the more experienced programmers.

Hi jeffjfish, If you want an online class where you actually hand in assignments and get feedback from a team of teacher and TAs, check out https://www.edx.org/courses/MITx/6.00x/2012_Fall/about. Same course, same school, same material, but with live classes, graded assignments and exams. Cheers! -Alxolex

I think its more of an interactive course initiative. Everything is based on participation and nohing is truly graded. The categories are based on PROBLEM SOLVING, ENGAGEMENT, and TEAMWORK.
