Why are S waves the second waves to be recorded on a seismograph?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

S for secondary waves , comes from the fact that it is the second direct arrival on an earthquake seismogram, after the compressional primary wave, because s waves travel slower in rock. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-wave
