Police are people. The "police department" is a thing. There is referring to a place. They're is a contraction for "they are." Their is used as a possessive, meaning something belongs to them. It's is a contraction for "it is." Its is used as a possessive, meaning something belongs to it.

I understand that, I'm just confused on whether it would be its or their. Because it sounds correct when I say the sentence with their placed into it, however these are the types of questions I always get wrong. the findings do belong to the Miami police, which is where I'm stuck at.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Miami police are people, not an "it."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand that, but the sentence seems like it is lumping the Miami police into one, like a collective noun.
