How do you do scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Errm 77.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can be described by 7.5 * 10^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My question for class is " The average person talks twenty-four million breaths every ten years. Write the number in scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does this help? Scientific notation simplifies the size of a number. So 6784000000000 is different from 389400000.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK 1,000 = 10x10x10 so it equals 10 ^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[10^{3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you give me an example for my homework

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1000 = 10x10 three times Hence \[10^{3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tommy i mean from my homework

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How many times do you need to times 10 by 10 to get a million?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10x10=100 10x10x10=1000...... carry on from there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would the answer be 2400000000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

24 million would be 24,000,000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But don't worry about that how many times would you have to multiply 10 by itself to get 1,000,000 (a million)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: counting the zeros can help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what would the answer be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10x10x10x10x10x10=1,000,000 i.e. \[10^{6}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is 24x\[10^{6}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I get a medal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[24*10^{6}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I get a medal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the amswer would be 240000000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh dear, the answer is not complete.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im in 7th grade

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not 11th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no \[24*10^{6}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Adios.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, count how many zeros u have. now, which way did u move the decimal? if u move it to the left, you have a + expoment. move to the right, its a - expoment..does that help in any way???
