A cube with a volume of 250cm3 is going to be reduced by a scale factor of 1/5. What will be the volume of the smaller cube? plz help me thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Divide by 5!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

50 cm^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok im stupid lol thanks again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have a whole page of this crap for hw tonite ^.^

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Okay the volume is length * width * height (all of which are equal). So, if you change the length of a side by multiplying it by 1/5, you are going to change the volume by (1/5)^3.

thanks

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Think of it with toy blocks - if you have blocks with side = 1, and you make a bigger cube out of 4 of them, you've got volume = 4, right? Now apply a scale factor of 1/2, and your 2x2x2 cube becomes 1x1x1. How many blocks? Hint: no sawing of blocks allowed :-)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Sorry, you make a bigger cube out of 8 of them, not 4! Volume = 8 (2^3). We apply a scale factor of 1/2 to the cube, and each side is now 1 block, giving a volume of 1 (1^3). The new volume is the (old side * scale factor)^3, so (2*1/2)^3 = 1.

@animals123 Now, perhaps you should give the medal to me instead of to the person who gave you the wrong answer :-)

Yoru right but i corrected this on his next problem and explained it in full to him.
