What is the length of each leg of the triangle below? A. 15 B. 11 C. √11 D. √22 E. 1 F. 11√2 (Picture below.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can use Pythagoras to solve this. \[a^2+b^2=c^2\] where in this case a=b since we have a 45 45 triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you still need more help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45^2+90^2=45^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RyanL.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope the 45 is an angle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a and b are the unknown sides while c=22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do I figure the two other sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The two sides are equal that means that you can set up the equation as \[a^2+a^2=c^2\] then simplify it to \[2a^2=c^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for a and replace c with 22 because we know that c=22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11^2+11^2=22^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So answer is 11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's doesn't seem right. Can you show your work and tell me how you got 11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11^2+11^2=22^2 2(11)^2=22^2 484=484? I did it again, that's what I got?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I see what you did wrong. You need to always follow the order of operations. PEMDAS Parentheses Exponent Multiplicaiton Division Addition Subtraction Before you can multiply 11 by 2 you need to do the exponent part first ^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do it the way I told you. Solve for a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2a^2=c^2 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos represents the bottom leg of the triangle so it's length = "the length you already have" 22 cos("the angle you have" 45). 22×cos45 And Sin is for the vertical leg. \[22\times \sin 45 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11^2+11^2=22^2 2(11)^2=22^2 242=484 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah Since it's doesnt equal that means that 11 can't be the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Instead of plugging things in and doing trial and error just solve for a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is F.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@3la2 I can say that the answer is A So who is right me or you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RyanL. Trust me on this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah because you know more math than I do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RyanL. I never said that and I was just gave him the correct method.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2(15)^2=22^2 450=484 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@marcoduuuh Hey just solve for a and you will find your answer. What you are doing is going to take you forever.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@3la2 You are saying my method is wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do I solve for A then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide both side by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RyanL. Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then square root both sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@3la2 Lol my method is better than yours.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay got it, the answer is F.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow good job @3la2 Don't give answers away. -.-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you guys. Sorry, I was on break & I forgot every single thing about geometry. Thank you for your patience.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RyanL. LOL are you serious? @marcoduuuh No problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@3la2 He doesn't even know trig so he won't even understand what you wrote down.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RyanL. Isn't he here to learn?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its F. He was right.
