Which of the following is an example of symbiosis? a. barnacles living on a whale’s skin b. a tree obtaining nutrients from the soil c. phytoplankton absorbing the sun’s rays d. a blue whale feeding on zooplankton

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SYMBIOSIS is a relationship, between two (or more) different species. LIVING species, meaning that they are both alive. Symbiosis is also very often a long term relationship, and not short term. What that means is that we shouldn't confuse it with predation. Predation is where one organism attacks and feeds on another organism. And POOF, the prey is gone. Not very long term, you see?

a. barnacles living on a whale’s skin is an example of mutualism b. a tree obtaining nutrients from the soil is an example of commensalism c. phytoplankton absorbing the sun’s rays is also an example of commensalism d. a blue whale feeding on zooplankton is an example of predation

@schizo219 I agree with what you had to say, for A and D. The question asked us which of the following is an example of symbiosis. That means that only one of the choices is an actual example of symbiosis. Symbiosis is a relationship between two ORGANISMS. That means that both members of the relationship must be ALIVE. The three types of symbiosis are Mutualism, Commensalism, and Parasitism. You know this. Take a look at C. It describes a relationship between phytoplankton & the sun. Is the sun an organism? Is it alive?

its b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not B. B describes the relationship between a tree and soil. But that's not symbiosis. Symbiosis is a long term relationship between two living things. Soil is not alive.
