Describe an individual with the karyotype shown.
a female with Turner's syndrome a male with Klinefelter's syndrome a female with Down syndrome a normal male
Okay. So, the chart that you posted shows us all the chromosomes, in one human cell. NORMALLY, humans have 46 chromosomes, which is the same as 23 PAIRS of chromosomes. Take a look at the chart. There are 23 numbered groups, on the chart. And every group SHOULD have two chromosomes, you see? For example, take a look at group number 1, and ONLY at group number 1. Group number 1 has two chromosomes. Now look at group number 2. Group number 2 also has two chromosomes. They should ALL be like that. EVERY numbered group should have TWO chromosomes. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Take a look at group number 23. Do you see something weird about group number 23? There's only ONE chromosome! That's not normal. Not at all. ~~~~~~~~~~ Is the chromosome in group number 23 long, or short? It's long. That means it's an X chromosome. (Because Y chromosomes are short.) So, again, there is only ONE chromosome, in group number 23. There SHOULD be two. In group number 23, we only have an X chromosome. So, there's a missing chromosome. A FEMALE would have (X X) A MALE would have (X Y) ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, let's take a look at all our choices: What are we looking at? -- a female with Turner's syndrome -- a male with Klinefelter's syndrome -- a female with Down syndrome -- a normal male ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let me tell you about the FIRST choice -- Turner's Syndrome. Turner's Syndrome is where a FEMALE is missing an X chromosome, in group number 23. Does that sound familiar to you? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Klinefelter's Syndrome is where a MALE has an extra X chromosome, in group number 23. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Down Syndrome is where a person has an extra chromosome, in group number 21. ~~~~~~~~~~ And NORMAL people should have 2 chromosomes in each group.
So its...b?? thats probably wrong
god damn ! nicely explained...
"Klinefelter's Syndrome is where a MALE has an extra X chromosome, in group number 23." is that what you see on the picture?
@UmmmHELP Take another look at the chart that you posted: http://assets.openstudy.com/updates/attachments/50f629efe4b081e396d7e559-ummmhelp-1358309936406-bio.gif Do you see how there are numbered groups, on the chart? Every group SHOULD have 2 chromosomes. Look at group #1. You can see that in group #1, there are two chromosomes. That is normal. Every group should have two chromosomes. Now, take a look at #23. We notice that in group #23, there is only one chromosome. You see there? That's not normal. There SHOULD be two. So, the person, whose chart this belongs to, has a genetic disorder. We know that, because this chart does not look like a normal person's chart. Group #23 does not have two chromosomes. There is only one chromosome in group #23. And that means that one is missing. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Using that information, what you can do is go back to the part where I explained all of your choices, and see if you can pick out the right one, this time.
Okay, @InYourHead but I already submitted the answer to this one and I figured it out and got the right answer...but thanks anyway!
