how do I get the vertex of a parabola? \[y=x^2+16x+64\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could put it in vertex form by completing the square of the right side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think we need to complete the square... \[y=(x+8)^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep thats it you noticed (16/2)^2 is 64 so you didnt have to do anything So the vertex is (-8,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know that that is the vertex? What's the formula for finding a vertex?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well when its in vertex form y=a(x-h)^2+k (h,k) is the vertex in this case h is -8 and k is 0

Makes sense! Thanks!!!
