You want to jointhe tennis team. You go to the sporting goods store with $100. If the tennis racket you want costs $80 and the tennis balls cost $4 per can, how many cans of tennis balls can you buy? How would I write an equation for this?

Okay, you know you have $100.  We could say M is money, and M = 100.

The price of a tennis racket is 80.

The price of a can of balls is 4.  So, if you buy x rackets and y cans of balls, you will spend S = 80*x + 4*y (S being the amount of money you are spending).  Now, we happen to know that you are only going to buy 1 racket, so x = 1 and our equation becomes S = 80 + 4*y.  If you are going to spend all 100, then we have

S=100=80+4*y  where y is the number of cans of balls.

100 = 80 + 4y
Subtract 80 from both sides
100-80 = 80-80+4y
20 = 4y
divide both sides by 4
5 = y

so you could buy 5 cans of balls.  Do you how that worked?
