let "s2" be the side of square 2

now we want to find the combined area of the squares

remember that
A=s^2

so total area would be s1^2+s2^2

the question then becomes, how do you determine what s1 and s2 are equal to

remember that the squares are made from the 2 pieces of wire
notice that the length of the wire is equal to the perimeter of the square

also remember that the perimeter of a square can be shown by the equation
P=4s
