What is the GCF of 6 and 4?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do you know though?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
Yes I do, do you know the GCF of 6 and 4?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
What is the largest factor 6 and 4 share in common?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what is the GCF of 6 and 4?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
6:1,2,4
4:1,2,3,6
so the answer is 2
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you got it, so the ratio of 6 to 4 can be reduced to the ratio of 3 to 2
How did I get 3 to 2? I divided 6 by 2 to get 3 (the first part of the ratio) then I divided the second part 4 by 2 to get 2
So
6:4 turns into 3:2
after dividing both parts (6 and 4) by the GCF 2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh now i get it thank you =]
But then after that it says
What is the ratio of all figures to stars?
A.5 to 2
B.5 to 3
C.3 to 5
D.2 to 3
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
How many figures are there total?

10
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so there are 10 figures to 6 stars
10:6
what does that reduce to?
use the same trick we did above
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do i have to divided it?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yep divide both parts by what number
OpenStudy (anonymous):
10:1,3,5,7,15,21,35,105
6:1,2,3,6
so i divided by 1 i guess?

no 3
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
10: 2*5
6: 2*3
the GCF is what?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
I listed the factors of both 10 and 6, see any common factors?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes its 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
So you divide both parts of 10:6 by 2 to get....
OpenStudy (anonymous):
the answer right?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
we'll see, what do you get
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i got 5 to 3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so the answer is 5:3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
now ask yourself: do the numbers 5 and 3 have any factors in common (other than 1)?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
umm well i got 1 still
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so because 1 is the only factor in common, you're done reducing
so you're correct, the answer is 5:3 or 5 to 3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh okay
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thank you

if you have something like
2 * ( 1 + 7)
you can multiply that outer "2" by each term inside the parenthesis like this
2 * 1 + 2 * 7
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
Or you can go backwards, and start with something like
8 * 3 + 8 * 9
and turn it into
8 * (3 + 9)
