Can a syn addition give enantiomers? I need to figure out what the resulting products of e-2-pentene and z-2-pentene will be if KMnO4 stops at the diol stage. I'm getting the same answer for both isomers which i don't think is correct.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

KMnO4 is an oxidizing agent that proceeds as syn-addition and I do believe that you will have enantiomers. A racemic mixture and stereochemistry is involved.
