have you ever studied quadratics ?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Factoring a quadratic trinomial of the form ax^2 + bx + c, a =/= 1 1 Try to factor a common factor out if there is one. 2. Multiply a and c. Find two factors of ac (call them p and q) that add up to b 3. Rewrite the trinomial with the bx term broken up into px + qx, so you have ax^2 + px + qx + c 4. Factor by parts. That means, take a factor out of first two terms and a factor out of last two terms. Then factor out common factor.

21x^2+31x+4 this one can be factored: you need 2 numbers whose product is +4 and when these are combined with the factors of 21 add up to 31 7 * 4 = 28 1 * 3 = 3 28 + 3 = 31 and finally, it can be (7x+1)(3x+4) i hope u can understand above
