Can you answer this one for me? For the data in the table, does y vary directly with x? If it does, write an equation for the direct variation. In the x slot is the numbers 16,32, and 48. In the y slot its 4,16 an 36.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Answers: yes; y = 2x yes; y = 4x yes; y = 8x no; y does not vary directly with x

OpenStudy (matt101):

Are the ordered pairs (16,4), (32,16), and (48, 36)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (matt101):

Then they do not vary directly. Although the value of y increase as the value of x increases, it does not in increase by the same amount each time. For something to increase directly, the graph of the relationship must be a straight line, so the slope should always be the same. Here, the slope of the first two points is 3/4, but the slope of the second two points is 5/4. Answer is D.

Ok thanks :)
