Solve the quadratic equation y2 - 5y = -4 by factoring

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 4 to both sides first.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

add the 4 and set it equal to zero. So: \[y^2-5y+4=0\]

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You're next step is to find two numbers(a and b) when multiplied give you -5, but when added result in +4. Those two numbers will make up: \[(x \pm a )(x \pm b) \] where a and b are real numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's the other way around. When you multiply them you get +4 and when you add them you get -5
