Who fired first at Lexington and Concord?
There are many accounts as to what happened at Lexington. (Concord came later.) Patriots were gathered outside of the tavern in the common. British troops marched toward town and began an encirclement. Captain Parker, leading the patriots, ordered his men to disperse as they were outgunned and outnumbered. Both Major Pitcairn, leading the British, and Parker ordered their men to hold fire, but a shot was fired from an unknown source. The ensuing skirmish was over quickly, leaving eight patriots dead. The patriots dispersed and then the British marched on to Concord. More than likely, the first shot was fired from inside the tavern, by an unknown patriot. No eyewitnesses saw anyone fire from either the British or the patriots who were lined up on the common.
