pooja195 (pooja195):

can someone teach me how to graph an inequality on a number line

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Do you have any you want to graph?

pooja195 (pooja195):

i mean like just on a numbrt line from -5 to 5 how would i graph y > 2x - 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh you wouldn't graph y > 2x - 1 on a number line you would graph it on a 2D coordinate plane

pooja195 (pooja195):

no u could do it on a number line

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you had something like x > 7, then you would use a number line but if you have y > 2x - 1, then you would first graph y = 2x - 1, make it a dashed line, then shade above that dashed line

pooja195 (pooja195):

well i have to do one on the number line u think u can help

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes I can, but y > 2x - 1 can't be done on a number line you have to have only one variable

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to graph something like x > 7 on a number line, you draw an open circle at 7 on the number line then shade to the right of that open circle

pooja195 (pooja195):

but say it was -3(x - 2)≤12 how would i graph that ???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

notice how there is only one variable, so this is possible to graph on the number line

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you first must solve for x

pooja195 (pooja195):

the wold be 1 rite

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-3(x - 2)≤12 -3x + 6 ≤ 12 -3x ≤ 12 - 6 -3x ≤ 6 x ≥ 6/(-3) x ≥ -2 Do you know how to graph x ≥ -2 ?

pooja195 (pooja195):

no and i have a test tommorow on this

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to graph x ≥ -2, you draw a closed circle at -2 on a number line then you shade to the right of this closed circle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you shade to the right because of the ≥ sign

pooja195 (pooja195):

so if the sign was -2 ≤x would i go to the left??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if it was x ≤ -2, then you would shade to the left

pooja195 (pooja195):

how would i kno wen to shade

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

≤ means shade to the left ≥ means shade to the right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the variable is always on the left side

pooja195 (pooja195):

ok and wen to fill in the circle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if there is a line under the < or > then you use a filled in circle if there isn't a line under the < or >, then you don't fill in the circle

pooja195 (pooja195):

ohh that makes sense thank you!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

≤ shade to left, filled in circle ≥ shade to right, filled in circle < shade to left, NOT filled in circle > shade to right, NOT filled in circle variable is always on the left side

pooja195 (pooja195):

makes sense thank you!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
