OpenStudy (anonymous):

in a batch of 890 calculators, 12 were found to be defective. what is the probability that a calculator chosen at random will be defective? write the probability as a percent. round to the nearest tenth of a percent if necessary.

OpenStudy (zehanz):

We assume there are 12 out of 890 defective, and that the defective ones are randomly distributed between the good ones. If you take one calculator at random, the chance it is defective will therefore be 12/890. If you use a (good!) calculator to calculate this number, multiply that answer by 100 to get a percentage!
