need help with the question word problem. How can I solve this using multiplication or addition? Carolyn is twice as old as Jackie. Ben is five years older than Jackie. The sum of the ages of the children is 41. What are the ages?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Make a system of equations: Carolyn=2*Jackie Ben=Jackie+5 Ben+Jackie+Carolyn=41 Then just solve it for each variable to get the ages.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's say that Carolyn's age is a variable called C. That means that Jackie's age is (1/2)*C and that Ben's age is (1/2)*c +5. And when we add up everyone's ages, we get 41. so that means C + (1/2)*C + (1/2)*C +5 = 41

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve for C, which will give you Carolyn's age. Then plug C in to get Jackie's age and Ben's age.

thanks. gonna try
