The equation is in standard form Ax + By = C (we'll pretend they are equalities for the moment) so the x-intercept (y = 0) is at (C/A, 0) and the y-intercept (x = 0) is at (0, C/B). To be a contender, the x-intercept has to be at (-4,0) and the y-intercept at (0, 1).

Hooray, we've ruled out two of the possibilities! That leaves us with: Open circle on -5, shading to the right. Closed circle on -5, shading to the right.

That's great. Answer the question, please. Is -4 * -4 < 20? We're trying to figure out how to get the answer when we don't have a list from which to choose. We've found one end of the shaded area, and we need to know whether it goes to the right or the left from there.

Great! So we know that the shaded area is to the right, because a point to the right of the endpoint satisfied the inequality. Now the only portion left to determine is whether we use an open or closed circle. Do you know which circle means include the point, and which means do not include the point?

Well, there are two different circle types, open and closed, right? They must have different meanings, agreed? We've got two different kinds of inequality symbols: \(\lt,\gt\) and \(\le, \ge\). Mathematicians never do anything without a reason.

An open circle doesn't include the point in the circle. We use an open circle if there is no equal component on the inequality sign. If our inequality was instead \(-4x \le 20\), the point \(x = -5 \) would satisfy the inequality, so we would want a closed circle to indicate that the point was included. Does that make sense?

You may not give yourself credit, but I bet you could have figured that all out. For these inequalities, first find the endpoint (by solving it as an equality), then test a point to see which side of the endpoint satisfies the inequality, and finally choose the circle type based on whether it is an inequality that includes an equals sign, or one that does not. Careful, methodical work carries the day.
