Cells have built in sensors that allow them to recognize that they have filled the allotted space and are touching neighboring cells. This then turns off cell proliferation. Cancer cells have mutated these processes so they cant stop mitosis.

realsofia is right. Cells do stop dividing, when they come in contact with other cells. We call it "density-dependent inhibition of growth."
