Tell whether the sequence , , , . . . is arithmetic, geometric, or neither. Find the next three terms of the sequence. A. neither; 7, -20, 61 B. geometric;7, -20, 61 C. arithmetic; , , D. geometric; , ,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe it is neither. If I assume that 7,-20,61 are your first three terms, then the pattern that i can see is that from 7 to -20, you are subtracting 27; from - 20 t= 61 you are adding 81. These are powers of three. I assume that your next term will be 61-243 and so on. But that is all that I have noticed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't really understand can you tell me more please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I made a mistake... . Tell whether the sequence 1/3, 0, 1, -2 is arithmetic, geometric, or neither. Find the next three terms of the sequence. Type your answer in the blank to the left.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An arithmetic sequence must have consistent factor additions or sequences. From 1/3 to 0, you add 2/3. If this trend continues, the next number must be 2/3 but since it is not, it is not an arithmetic sequence. 0 cannot appear in a strictly non zero geometric sequence because a term's value is determined by its previous value times some constant. Thus, this sequence is not geometric. As to what the next terms are, I'm not so sure...I need to think about that one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh thanks for the effort! :) I'll ask my teacher

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That negative 2 is throwing me off. It occurs at an irregular interval.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you mean the negative 20?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused. you wrote that your sequence is 1/3,0,1,-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh never mind I know what you mean now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am more confused o__O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do not understand how answer choices A and B connect to the wuestion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am going with A... Neither

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Choices C and D seem to be missing numbers...what are they?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They actually are not... but I think they might be C. arithmetic; -1/3,11/3 ,3 D. geometric; -3 1/3 ,-5 5/9 , -9 7/27 I found the same question online unanswered.
