SnCl2 is ionic whereas SnCl4 is covalent why

even though SnCl2 completes its octet at the tin centres and is polymeric in nature,,,,,SnCl2 in solid state does not consist of a repeating lattice of distinct Sn2+ cations and Cl- anions...hence it is an ionic compound,,,, but,,, sncl4 has tetrahedral geometry and consists of a perfect chain of the elements.....and is hence covalent.....
