Suppose someone tells you that she has a triangle with sides having lengths 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5 yards. Is this a right triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, because the sides of a right triangle can be derived from using the Pythagorean formula. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_theorem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3,4,5 works, but not 3.5,4.5,5.5.

I really appreciate the links your sending!!!

basically, if you can show that a^2 + b^2 = c^2 is true then you will have shown that a triangle with side lengths of a, b, c is a right triangle where a,b are the legs and c is the hypotenuse

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this is known as the converse of the pythagorean theorem
