can someone help me solve this , preferably with substitution y = 3x - 5 2x + y = 8

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The first equation gives you y isolated in terms of x, so let's substitute the right hand side of that equation where you see y in the second equation. \[2x + (3x - 5) = 8\] Solve that for \(x\), then use the value in either equation to find \(y\) (I would use the substitution equation \(y = 3x-5\) as it is already in the form you want).
