Simplify i^38

hartnn (hartnn):

hi :) do you know what 'i' is here ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NO :( The question on my virtual school just has the 'i' italisized raised to the 38th power...

hartnn (hartnn):

ok, then let me tell you : \(\large i= \sqrt {-1}\)

hartnn (hartnn):

so, \(i^2=-1\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks <3 Does anyone know how to simplyfy \[\sqrt{-121}\]

hartnn (hartnn):

but did you get i^38 first ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I won't know until I finish all 5 questions. But it was one of the answer choices :)

i is an imaginary number. so basically its -1,-i,1, and i. its just really to tell you if your answer will be positive or negative. first you'll divide the exponent (38) by 4 to see which interval it it. so 38/4= 9.5 or 9 remainder 5. if it ends in .25, it's 1 i, if it ends in .5, it's two i's, .75 for 3 i's and it'll be a whole number if it's 4 i's.
