Can you check this one question? Line segment AB is equal to line segment DE. Solve for x. Answer options: A) x=19 B) x=12 C) x=9 D) x=16

That's the triangle that goes with the question, and I think it's B btw.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and wher I put is equal, there are "ll" I'm not positive what it means really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's a reference to parallel lines, and what you have here is a system of ratios with similar triangles. The corresponding parts will have equal ratios: \[\frac{ x - 3 }{ 4 }= \frac{ 12 }{ 3 }\]So, all you have to do is solve for "x".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so like 12*4 = 48 and (x-3)(3)= 3x-9 so 48=3x-9 is that right so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if I were to cross multiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, you are on the right track.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

48-9 = 39 Because you subtract 9 from both sides, and then 39=3x then divide 3 from both sides being x=13, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, from that equation, you are supposed to add 9 to both sides, not subtract.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, shoot.. I knew that O.O just a slip up... so 48+9=57 then 57=3x and divide by 3 so x=19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good job! You got it right! @Curiousasker7

Thank you for helping!
